Is your CV getting you an interview?
By RWR Group Marketing
You have years of retail leadership under your belt, a solid track record of hitting sales targets and team management experience to back it up. Yet, your application inbox remains quiet.
In today's competitive Australian and New Zealand retail landscape, a standard CV will not cut it. Your resume needs to communicate business impact within six seconds.
Quick Self-Assessment: Is Your CV Ready?
Before rewriting a single line, rate your current CV against these three questions:
- Does your top third highlight numbers? If a recruiter scans the top half of page one, do they immediately see team sizes, turnover figures or conversion rate increases?
- Is it tailored to executive retail skills? Does it highlight multi-site operations, VM compliance, inventory management and shrinkage reduction?
- Is the formatting modern and scannable? Does it use clean spacing, clear bold headings and zero dense blocks of text?
If you answered "no" to any of these, your CV is likely dropping out of ATS screening or getting skipped by busy talent acquisition managers.
How to Build an Interview-Winning Retail CV
How does your business measure up when the glossy recruitment ads are stripped away? Review these three touchpoints:
1. Lead with Commercial Achievements
Retail is driven by numbers. Swap broad duty statements for measurable outcomes:
Weak: "Responsible for managing store targets and staff schedules."
Strong: "Led a team of 14, driving a 12% YoY sales increase and maintaining wage control within 0.5% of budget."
2. Focus on Category Expertise
Be explicit about your retail domain. State whether your background is in fast fashion, luxury goods, big-box hardware, FMCG or specialty retail. Nuance matters to hiring managers.
3. Format for Rapid Scanning
Keep your document to two or three pages maximum. Use clean, professional typography such as Poppins for modern legibility. Utilize concise bullet points instead of long narrative paragraphs.
