The Role
As the Category Manager, you will take full ownership of your assigned portfolio's success, profitability, and local market relevance. This is a strategic role where you will manage the P&L, negotiate with local and national suppliers to secure optimal terms, and build an exciting, customer-centric product assortment that sets new standards in independent retail.
Key Responsibilities:
- P&L Management: Take full accountability for category profitability, sales targets, margin health, and strategic space productivity.
- Range & Assortment Planning: Utilise data-driven insights to manage product lifecycles, curate high-quality ranges, and secure exclusive product launches that appeal to a premium demographic.
- Vendor Negotiations: Partner and negotiate with major suppliers, local growers, and boutique vendors to maximize promotional support, supply chain efficiency, and gross margins.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration : Partner closely with Marketing and In-Store Operations to plan impactful promotions, seamless store layouts, and ensure exceptional execution at the shelf.
- Market Insights : Keep a finger on the pulse of food trends, competitor movements, and local community preferences to keep the portfolio ahead of the curve.
- Supermarket or Liquor or FMCG or Produce Expertise: Proven background in Category Management, Buying, or Senior Merchandising within a supermarket, grocery, or high-volume FMCG retail environment.
- Strategic Negotiation: Demonstrated success in vendor relationship management and navigating complex supplier agreements to drive wins.
- Strong Analytical Foundation: Comfort working with retail data, conducting deep margin analysis, and translating sales data into actionable layout and range strategies.
- Independent & Proactive Style: The capability to drive your category autonomously while thriving as part of a close-knit, collaborative support team.
- Communication & Vision: Exceptional ability to articulate strategic insights to senior leadership and align store teams behind category goals.
